Work has begun on developing 77 brand new affordable homes in Irvine, Ayrshire.
The new Irvine Housing Association (IHA) properties form the second phase of the successful Tarryholme development, which saw 87 houses built in 2019.
The £ 13million project, backed by a £ 6million grant from the Scottish Government, should be completed by the fall of 2022 and will include a range of property types to suit all needs including houses with two, three and four bedrooms.
More than 60% of the properties are designed for veterans, wheelchair users and those with additional mobility needs.
These include 12 veteran’s two-bed cottages, 36 two-bed bungalows, three two-bed bungalows for wheelchair users, and two three-bed bungalows for wheelchair users.
Some of the houses were built in the first phase of the Tarryholme development
The remainder of the development, being built by North Ayrshire-based contractor McTaggart Construction, will consist of two, three and four bedroom apartments for general needs.
Paul Hillard, Irvine Housing Association, said, “This is a really exciting time for us and our customers. The first phase of Tarryholme development yielded excellent quality homes that are now enjoyed by many families. So it’s great to start on this next phase.
“There is an urgent need for new homes in Irvine, and while of course most of our budget goes to maintaining and improving our existing homes, we are determined to do our part to provide much-needed additional housing in the area.
“We are excited to be contributing to the Scottish Government’s plans to deliver 100,000 affordable homes over the next ten years. As part of the Riverside Group, we can invest more money in building new homes than many of our colleagues, and that makes me very proud. “
This is the second large-scale development IHA announced this year.
Last month, the association confirmed that 63 affordable modular homes are currently being developed in South Ayrshire – the largest of its kind in the country.
The IHA confirmed in its business plan that it will deliver 300 new homes over the next three years.
The organization has been part of the Riverside Group since 2011.
