UH escapes UC Irvine in five sets | News, sports, jobs

Rado Parapunov scored 25 kills when the senior men’s volleyball team from the University of Hawaii narrowly prevented their first loss of the season and defeated UC Irvine in five sets on Friday night at the SimpliFi Arena at the Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu.

Colton Cowell, a graduate of King Kekaulike High School, added 17 kills in the 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 24-26, 15-13 win. 0, 9-0 in the Big West Conference game.

Jakob Thelle distributed 56 assists and Gage Worsley had 11 digs for UH, who only managed five blocks during the entire game. Cowell also had six digs, three blocks, and an ace.

The match was over for most of the night – the exception being the fourth when the Anteaters took the 11-5 lead, although Hawaii eventually returned to the set late. The teams were tied in the fifth game at 1 p.m. before an Irvine service mistake and Cowell’s killing put the match away.

Joel Schneidmiller led the UCI (2-12, 2-7) with 20 kills.

The teams play in their regular season finale again today.
