Seagulls will end the season in Irvine and return to San Diego in the fall

When the Seagulls announced they were moving to Irvine temporarily three months ago, they were hoping they could return late in the season, or at least for the postseason if restrictions on fans at indoor events eased.

“That’s the best scenario,” said Matt Savant, Gull’s president of business operations.

Those restrictions will indeed be relaxed, but the seagulls won’t be back until the 2021-22 AHL season kicks off later this year.

“While we are excited to see our great fans again at Pechanga Arena, the recently updated state guidelines for indoor events do not provide ASM Global with the time it needs to get the arena up and running for the remainder of the 2020-21 season Prepare business operations, “the seagulls said in a statement Monday. “As a result, the Seagulls will end the 2020-21 AHL season at the FivePoint Arena in Irvine.”

Pechanga Arena officials also released a statement that they “have already worked with the team to plan and prepare to bring the seagulls home to the Pechanga Arena to play in front of their local fan base and the AHL season” 21-22 to start this fall. ”

The Seagulls started the season 7-1, then dropped nine of their next eleven, but won their last seven and improved to 16-10, second in the AHL Pacific Division. You have 18 games left in the regular season, which ends May 15th. The league is expected to announce postseason plans later this month.
