IRVINE, California – The men from Azusa Pacific Athletics were on duty on Friday and took part in the Team for Titus Invitational, moderated by Concordia Irvine. The Cougars put in a strong performance, with several athletes setting personal bests, and Jermel Jones II took a provisional mark in the long jump for the second year in a row. Jones II made his preliminary jump of 7.39 m (24 ‘3 “) from the Battle of SoCal a few weeks ago, marking a day when he did well in three different competitions. In both the triple jump and the high jump, Jones turned in Career top marks of 45 ‘6½ “(triple jump) and 6’ 2¾” (high jump). He finished first in both the long jump and the triple jump.
Weston Ellis also had a multiple personal best day on Friday. In the discus, Ellis reached a distance of 150’7 “, which is more than 10 feet wider than any of his previous college brands. He also showed a strong performance in the hammer, an event he added this season. He had a mark of 145 ‘, which was nearly 11 feet farther than its 134’ 2 “distance in the Battle of SoCal.
On the track, Azusa Pacific was sharp in both distance and sprint. A true newcomer to the Cougars, Dider Sandoval set a personal record for over a minute and finished fifth in the 5K run. He crossed the finish line with a time of 15: 33.99. “Dider had the most impressive race of the night,” said distance coach Sean Smith. “He’ll be really, really good in the future.” The Cougar distance team also rose in the 1500 run where they finished one, two, three. Nathaniel Tamminga finished first at 3: 59.46, Marcus Dawal Jr. was second at 4: 00.17 and Josh Nyberg rounded out the top three with a time of 4: 01.12.
In the sprints, it was Daniel Bessolo who had a great day. Bessolo took first place in the 200 with a personal record of 21.55 and second in the 100 with another personal record time of 10.82.
While the men won’t compete tomorrow, the Cougar women will travel to Irvine on Saturday March 27th to visit the team for the Ely Invitational. For live streaming: click HERE.
