A 45-year-old Lake Forest man is behind bars for murder for allegedly beating his longtime wife to death with a tire iron when she came to work as a nanny in Irvine, prosecutors said Tuesday.
Omar Velazquezhuar is charged with murder.
Velazquezhuar is accused of killing 48-year-old Dora Maria Rosas Moreno from Santa Ana on February 26th.
The two had been together for 23 years but it was unclear whether they were married, said Assistant District Attorney Mark Geller.
The two had split up and the defendant was allegedly jealous that the victim had “moved on” and saw someone else, Geller said.
The two have a 20 year old son and an 18 year old daughter.
The victim had worked as a nanny for an Irvine family for three years and came to work around 7 a.m. when the defendant confronted her, Geller said.
The defendant, who parked his car around the corner, used a tire iron to hit them, Geller alleged.
The victim was taken to hospital in critical condition and Velazquezhuar was charged with attempted murder on March 1. When the victim died on March 17, the charges on that day were raised to murder.
After the attack, the defendant fled the scene and was found by police around 7:45 a.m. in Vetrina and Spirito and then arrested, the police said.
Velazquezhuar is due to be tried on April 16 in the Santa Ana prison courtroom. He was being held without bail.
