The job captain monitors the work of architects and draftsmen and reports to the project manager about progress and problems if necessary. They ensure the team is on schedule and executing circuit diagrams that meet the needs of the project manager or designer. The job captain works as an architect and can participate in the creation of drawings and drafts. They usually help create the necessary drawings using computer-aided drawing (CAD) software and Revit. In their oversight role, the job captain also reviews the drawings of the rest of the team of architects, suggests revisions and lets other draftsmen update the drafts of these suggestions.

Tasks / responsibilities

  • Creates contract documents (CDs)
  • Review CDs to make sure that there are fixed standards, mechanics, building systems, codes, and ADA requirements
  • For smaller projects, the entire CD production and review can be monitored
  • Coordinates with senior technical and design staff to provide engineering solutions to design dilemmas
  • Manages the project through the contract management phase
  • Coordinates the work of the engineering office to ensure compliance with the design solution and timely filing of documents
  • Field research assistance may be required in unusual circumstances
  • Manages the contract management budget for assigned projects
  • Ensures adherence to the specified budget and immediately informs the senior job captain / architect, PM and / or customers about possible deviations from the budget
  • Can oversee the work of junior and intermediate designers
  • Monitor assignments and provide feedback on the work product. Conducts customer interviews to determine the technical requirements for the design


  • Comprehensive knowledge of design principles and standards
  • Intermediate documentation and field observation skills
  • Advanced detailing skills for interior design
  • Basic knowledge of CDs and procedures
  • Knowledge of building systems, codes and ADA requirements
  • Knowledge of space requirements
  • Work knowledge in contract management
  • Advanced MS Office Suite knowledge
  • Advanced Revit skills
  • Advanced Adobe Creative Suite knowledge
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills
  • Advanced presentation and graphic communication skills
  • Proven ability to manage and lead junior employees through a combination of direct authority and expertise

Preferred experience / minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture or interior design
  • 2-4 + years of work experience
  • Knowledge of building codes, zoning, jurisdiction processes, building materials, specifications, and building techniques
  • Experience in the creation of construction documents and in field observation
  • Knowledge of Revit
  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop)
  • Knowledge of BIM360, AutoCAD, SketchUp and other 3D modeling software
  • LEED accreditation preferred
