Gkkworks, an Irvine-based architecture firm with 100 employees, was acquired by CannonDesign.

The terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The acquisition increases CannonDesign’s presence in Southern California and adds Irvine offices in San Diego and Pasadena. After the acquisition, CannonDesign will employ around 1,100 people.

“Our merger with gkkworks is another step in expanding our partnerships on the west coast. More importantly, CannonDesign will continue to expand beyond architecture and engineering solutions to offer our customers a fully integrated approach,” said Brad Lukanic , Chief Executive of CannonDesign New York.

Founded in 1991 by Praful Kulkarni, Gkkworks has recently worked on projects such as Concordia University’s Nursing Science Unit and the Midfield Satellite Concourse at Los Angeles International Airport.

“When we started gkkworks more than 26 years ago, our goal was to become one of the most influential design and construction companies in the world,” said CEO Kulkarni. “With this merger, we can do just that, while also gaining access to some of the most creative design and engineering experts in the world.”

Gkkworks was ranked 21st on the Business Journal’s most recent list of architectural firms, reporting $ 6.2 million in bills for the twelve months ended June 30. There were 39 employees in Orange County, including nine architects.
