When the officers arrived on site, they spoke to a man who said he had met Daniel Ramirez and his girlfriend Mallory Arredondo a few days earlier. He said the couple asked to borrow their Ford Mustang, but when it refused, they took it anyway.
An officer then spotted the vehicle around 12:25 p.m. when trying to stop, but the driver fled and a brief chase followed before being canceled for the suspect’s dangerous driving, police said.
The officers found the unoccupied vehicle with the engine running about 20 minutes later in an underground car park at the complex. The officers tried to contact the owner of the vehicle but were unable to establish contact.
They believed he was in his home and possibly in danger because of the “suspicious circumstances”, police said. Officers then evacuated neighboring homes and the Orange County Fire Authority was asked to stage nearby to provide assistance in case someone was injured.
The owner of the vehicle then left his home and told the police that he had been flogged with a gun and held against his will, Ramirez and Arredondo. However, he was allowed to leave after the couple heard announcements from the police department.

The man also told police that Ramirez and Arredondo, who barricaded themselves in the apartment, were armed with multiple firearms.
An IPD SWAT team responded to the scene around 6:55 p.m. and was able to take both Arredondo and Ramirez into custody shortly before 9:00 p.m., the department said.
Police said a non-serialized AR-15 assault rifle and two handguns in various stages of disassembly had been recovered from the apartment.
Ramirez was arrested and booked in Orange County Jail on suspicion of kidnapping, attack with a deadly weapon, criminal threats and pending arrest warrants. Arredondo was arrested, quoted and released on pending arrest warrants.
